The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a safe and hostile-free learning and work environment for students and employees, free from discrimination, harassment, bullying and retaliation. The District takes a strong position against bias, discrimination, harassment, or any behavior that infringes on or negatively impacts the safety and well-being of students and employees based on their race, color or national origin and will take all necessary actions to stop it.
Title VI is a federal law that protects persons from discrimination based on their race, color or national origin in any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. Title IV ensures that a school district will provide the same opportunities for all students to participate in programs and classes to the same extend afforded to others.
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 says that “No person…shall, on the grounds of race or ethnicity, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.” Nationality includes citizenship, country of origin and national origin. Race or ethnicity includes ancestry, color, and ethnic background.
The District prohibits all forms of illegal discrimination based on race, color, ethnicity, or national origin, which limits the opportunities of students to gain equal access to the District’s programs, activities, and services. The District will take proactive measures to address bias, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and retaliation and will take the appropriate administrative actions to stop its reoccurrence.
